How to Organize One Junk Drawer Without Emptying Everything

By The Evergrown | April 9, 2026

A messy junk drawer might seem like a small thing, but it can quietly add to that daily feeling of frustration when you can’t find what you need.

The good news is you don’t have to dump everything out to fix it. In fact, that usually creates a bigger mess than necessary.

This method keeps the process simple, controlled, and easy to finish.

What You’ll Need

  • Trash bag
  • Damp cloth or paper towel
  • Small container or bowl
  • Optional: small boxes or trays you already have

No need to buy anything new.

Step 1: Work in One Small Section

Open the drawer and choose one small section to start with.

This could be the front corner or one side.

Only focus on that area—leave the rest alone for now.

Step 2: Remove a Small Handful of Items

Take out just a few items from that section.

Do not empty the entire drawer.

This keeps the project manageable and prevents a bigger mess.

Step 3: Throw Away Obvious Trash

Move quickly and don’t overthink.

  • Throw away dried-out pens
  • Remove broken items
  • Get rid of scraps and packaging

This step clears space immediately.

Step 4: Group Similar Items Together

Sort what’s left into simple groups:

  • Pens and markers
  • Batteries
  • Scissors and small tools
  • Paper clips and rubber bands
  • Items that belong somewhere else

Keep this simple. You’re not creating a perfect system.

Step 5: Put Back Only What Belongs

Before returning anything, ask:

Do I actually use this?

If not, keep it out of the drawer.

This is where most of the clutter gets reduced.

Step 6: Create Simple Zones

Put items back in small grouped areas.

If you have containers, use them. If not, just keep similar items together.

The goal is to stop everything from becoming one pile.

Step 7: Move to the Next Section

Repeat the same process section by section until the drawer is done.

This keeps everything controlled and easy to finish.

Step 8: Wipe as You Go

As areas clear out, take a few seconds to wipe them down.

This makes the drawer feel clean without adding extra work at the end.

Beginner Tips

  • Do not empty the entire drawer
  • Work in small sections only
  • Move quickly to avoid overthinking
  • Done is better than perfect

Optional Variations

  • Use small lids or boxes as dividers
  • Keep one small “miscellaneous” section
  • Limit how full the drawer gets
